Prototype dying?
When I found prototype, I was really happy to find a powerful javascript abstraction library, and so far I’ve written a lot of code using it. Overall I think it’s a great library.
The problem is that a lot of the hype and thus community around ruby on rails and prototype seems to have stopped ro slowed down, and the effects engine (scriptaculous) is way too bloated, slow and annoying to use.
The new best of breed javascript library seems to be jQuery, which was just a random library without much support when I picked prototypejs.
I’m not the kind of coder who likes to learn new tools all the time, but I’m thinking I should switch to jQuery and ditch prototype. Also Googling for prototype is annoying, the word prototype is too generic, and even ‘prototype js’ is no good because prototype is also the name of a method in javascript.
