Magnolia dies
Magnolia, which is a del.icio.us alternative - just went down hard and admitted they have data corruption that will result in loss of people’s bookmarks.
I’ve never liked magnolia, when I tried them out I asked them to offer a space separated tagging scheme, was rebuffed, so I stayed at del.icio.us.
Like their funky domain name ma.gnolia.com seems to copy del.icio.us, but not really get what the service is really about. I’ve always had a strong sense using magnolia that it was not developed by serious programming geeks, but graphic designers who code on the side.
It’s hard to give these guys the benefit of the doubt of some act of god destroying their data, as they don’t really give out any details on what happened.
Their fortunes were looking up recently too, as a potential del.icio.us replacement for people looking to leave that sinking ship. Clay Shirky even moved there. Depending on the degree of data loss at magnolia, this could kill them for good, I’d certainly never trust them.
